Over 60 – LMC Health Clinic

The Alameda Health Consortium and Community Health Center Network have conducted an annual series of Professional Development Sessions for our employees since 2009. For the 2013 series, AHC and CHCN management decided to focus on providing our employees with a better understanding of our member health centers and the important work that goes on in the clinics. To accomplish this task, we asked our employees to venture out of our San Leandro offices and visit our member health centers to learn firsthand about the sites and to see how what we do here correlates with what is done in the clinics.

We kicked off the 2013 Professional Development Session at LifeLong Medical Care’s (LMC) Over 60 Health Center on May 21, 2013. Janice Edwards, Communications Manager & Project Manager at LMC, organized an informative trip for our group. The visit began with an LMC history lesson given by COO, Brenda Shipp. Next, Dr. Floyd Huen spoke with the group about clinic life and treating patients. To wrap up the event we were fortunate enough to meet two LMC patients who are also member advocates. They shared why LMC is so important to them; they’re not just a number, they have names and they truly feel cared for.

Our second visit was to Axis Community Health (Axis) on June 18th. Brenda Jorgenson, Executive Assistant at Axis, arranged an extensive tour of the Axis Pleasanton Site. Brenda, along with Christina McFadden, COO, and J.P. Sahi, Clinic Director, split us up into groups of five and showed us around the entire site. After that tour was completed we drove to the future site of the newest Axis clinic on Las Positas Boulevard in Pleasanton. Development Director, Valerie Jonas, showed us around the building and gave us an overview of the future layout.

These first two visits were a huge success and the employees at AHC & CHCN are eager to visit more of our member health centers. If you would like to organize a visit at your site for a small group of AHC & CHCN employees, please contact Joi Wilson at jwilson@chcnetwork.org.
