Food Insecurity: What Providers Should Know

Continuing Medical Education Series
Designated for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)TM

Good nutrition is fundamental for staying healthy and assisting the body to heal when ill. Food Insecurity- having limited access to healthy food and/or an inability to afford food can impact the prevention and management of disease and health. Many providers are unaware of the epidemiology linking food insecurity and health outcomes and strategies to address this disparity in the clinical environment. In this CME program providers will:

  1. Understand the epidemiology linking food insecurity and poor health outcomes.
  2. Learn how to screen patients for food insecurity in the clinical setting.
  3. Learn strategies to better manage health and medical conditions for food insecure patients.
  4. Learn how the health care team and clinic staff can coordinate referrals to local food resources.

Kate Cheyne, MPH Research Manager at the Alameda County Community Food Bank.
